Overview

Taking 5-hydroxytryptophan, or 5-HTP, may lead to reduced appetite or mild weight loss in some people, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Five-HTP is a chemical that the body makes from tryptophan. The body converts tryptophan into 5-HTP, then 5-HTP into serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps to regulate mood, behavior and appetite. Five-HTP is not found in foods; it can be found in supplement form. The supplement 5-HTP is obtained from an African plant called Griffonia simplicifolia.

Step 1

Talk to your health care provider about whether to take 5-HTP and what dosage to take. Your doctor can help you decide if 5-HTP is right for you.

Step 2

Reduce calories to lose weight. 5-HTP may help decrease your appetite, which will help you to reduce calories.

Step 3

Begin an exercise regimen, or increase the amount of exercise you're currently doing. 5-HTP won't cause you to lose weight unless you burn more calories than you consume.

Step 4

Alert your doctor to any medical conditions you have. If you have certain medical conditions, including Parkinson's disease, cancer, lung disease, liver disease, severe allergies, myalgia, edema, sickle cell anemia, hemophilia, pregnancy, autoimmune diseases or peripheral neuropathy, you should not be taking 5-HTP, according to MayoClinic.com.

Step 5

Tell your doctor other medications you are taking. Your doctor can alert you if any of these medications will interact with 5-HTP. Some drugs that may interact include anti-depressants, weight loss drugs, anti-Parkinson's medications, tranquilizing medications, antihistamines, intravenous drugs, cancer chemotherapy or antibiotic medications.
